"...what gives. This was meant to be a paid-package-sure-succeed UMAT program - after all, I paid alot of money. Well not being the type of loser who gives up I decided to spend more time in pursuing the success of the UMAT test whilst studying at the same time. (For all of students, repeating Year 12 if possible is a good option; not to be ruled out, more on this later)..."

UMAT SECTION 1: LOGIC GAMES TEST-RUN

The ACER UMAT Information Booklet specifies the 44 questions in Section 1 is given 65 minutes to finish. Doing the math that's about 1.48 minutes per question. Here I present you 12 challenging questions. Stop the casual reading about right now, for this I bring you a mini-UMAT test for Section 1. That's right, treat this like the real UMAT because you may struggle to finish on time. Set your timer to 18 minutes.

Okay, take a cup of water, an empty A4 paper for scribbling. Sit down and make sure your comfortable. Time yourself and let me know how you went in the comment section below. As per usual, answers will be provided there but this time, why not discuss you're answers rather than just giving me the answers. By discussing it you allow people to see how you think around a question.

Finished reading? Okay, get ready. Here we go! READ MORE to START THE TEST.

Each person chosen for a team plays opposite a specific player chosen for the ocher team.

Those not chosen sit on the bench. Charles, Edna, Katya, and Paulina are tall; the rest of the players are short. A tall player can play only opposite another call player. Questions 7-12

A laboratory is testing six chimps for acquisition of communication skills. The six chimps are Alonzo,Bobo, Carlo, Dingo, Elmo, and Frank. A technician will work with one chimp at a time for a single time slot-defined as an entire morning or an entire afternoon. Each chimp will be tested exactly once. Time slots not filled by chimp testing are considered free. The tests will be conducted during a single week from Monday to Friday.

Alonzo is tested on Thursday morning.

Bobo, Elmo, and Frank sleep late, and can be tested only in the afternoon.

No testing is conducted on Monday morning. Elmo is not tested on Monday or Tuesday.

The time slot immediately preceding that in which Alonzo is tested is free.

Alonzo is tested after Dingo but before Frank. Carlo is tested on Tuesday.

7. Which one of the following must be true?

(A) Bobo is tested on Monday.

(B) Alonzo is the fourth chimp tested.

(C) Carlo is the second chimp tested.

(D) Alonzo is tested immediately before Frank.

(E) There are exactly three free morning time slots.

8. Which one of the following pairs of chimps CANNOT be tested on the same day?

(A) Bobo and Dingo

(B) Carlo and Dingo

(C) Carlo and Bobo

(D) Alonzo and Elmo

(E) Alonzo and Frank

9. If Dingo is tested on Tuesday morning, which one of the following must be true?

(A) Elmo is tested on Thursday.

(B) Frank is tested on Friday.

(C) Bobo is tested on Monday.

(D) There are exactly two free morning time slots.

(E) There are exactly two free afternoon time slots.

10. If Frank is tested two days after Bobo is tested, which one of the following can be false?

(A) Frank is tested immediately after Alonzo.

(B) Bobo is tested immediately after Carlo.

(C) The free time slots are only on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

(D) Elmo is the last chimp tested.

(E) Dingo is the first chimp tested.

11. If Dingo is tested in the afternoon, in how many different ways can the chimps be scheduled for testing?

(A) 1

(B) 2

(C) 3

(D) 4

(E) 5

12. If at least one chimp is tested each day, and if Elmo is tested on the same day as another chimp, which one of the following must be true?

(A) Bobo is tested in the time slot immediately preceding the time slot in which Carlo is tested.

(B) Elmo is tested on the day after Dingo is rested.

I'm sure people read this, don't worry ;)
Here's what I thought anyway... not sure if it's right as I might have missed something. Keep up the good work though!

    Q7: B
    - I reckon the best way to answer such a problem is to organise the material in a quick, effective way. Below is the diagram I used (one possible case), with 'X' being the 'definite' free time slots.
    -- -- -- -- --
    X C D A
    B X E F

For option A, B does not necessarily have to be tested on Monday. For option B, however, it can be seen that A is the 4th chimp tested regardless of the way we interchange D and B, so it's the correct answer. Option C doesn't have to be true as we can allocate B to Monday afternoon, and option E is wrong as there can be 2 free morning time slots, instead of 3.

    Q8: A
    -- -- -- -- --
    X C D A
    B X E F
From the diagram, it's obvious that B and D cannot be tested on the same day as B must be tested in the afternoon, and since C must be tested on Tuesday, there are no days in which B and D can be tested together.

    Q9: C
    -- -- -- -- --
    X D A
    B C X E F
If D is tested on Tuesday morning, C must be tested in the afternoon. And since B must be tested in the afternoon, B must be tested on Monday as that's the only free afternoon slot.

    Q10: E
    -- -- -- -- --
    X C D A
    B X F E
If F is tested 2 days after B is tested, F must be tested on Thursday as the latest time in which B can be tested is during Tuesday afternoon. From this diagram, option A must be true as A must be tested on Thursday and F must be tested in the afternoon. Option B is true as B is tested in the time slot immediately after C. Option C is true as the only free time slots are during Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Option D is also true, so option E can be false and must be the correct answer.

    Q11: D
    -- -- -- -- --
    X C A
    B D X F E
If D is tested in the afternoon, D can be tested on Monday or Tuesday, leaving 2 permutations. Also, it can be seen that E and F are interchangable, so 2 * 2 = 4 different ways.

    Q12: B
    -- -- -- -- --
    X C D A
    B C X E F
If at least one chimp is tested each day, and E is tested on the same day as another chimp, this is the only possible arrangement, where C can be tested in the morning or the afternoon. From this, option A doesn't necessarily have to be true; option B does; option C doesn't as C can be tested in the morning; option D is obviously wrong as C is tested in between; and option E is wrong because 2 chimps are tested between C and E. Thus, B is the answer.

    -- -- -- -- --
    X C D A
    B X E F

For question 7-12 I thought you would have to arrange it like this as the slot preceeding Alonzo has to be free (afternoon wed) and as elmo sleeps late and isn't tested m/tues must be thurs fri, also F must be thurs fri as sleeps late and is after A. B must be afternoon m/tues as sleeps late and is before A.
    m t w t f
    -- -- -- -- --
    M X C/D D A
    A B/D B/D or C/B X E/F E/F
